The Positive Mind – a Key to Successful Weight Loss

The powers of positive thinking are tremendous when it concerns losing weight. If you continue to hold on to negative thoughts, your weight loss efforts could come to a grinding halt. On the other hand, it should come easily to you if you harness the energy from you positive thoughts. Allow me give you an example.

Chances are you consider yourself to be fat; you may even hate yourself for that very reason. Believe it or not, this is the reason why you are unable to lose the weight. Now, reverse that thinking, think yourself to be thin instead. Just suppose the positive affect it can have on your weight loss goals? Your whole outlook and mental attitude can determine your goals. This article reveals the steps to developing a positive mindset and outlined are two key steps that will help you unblock your weight loss barrier.

1. Determining Why You Want To Lose Weight.

Determine the reason why it is you want to lose weight? Are you doing it for yourself, for your health and wellbeing? Is it merely because you are no longer able to endure the snide remarks from work colleagues, maybe you keep getting rejected by the opposite sex, or is it the longing to look like your favorite celebrity?

No reason is the wrong reason to lose weight and whatever your reason, make sure you own it. Compose a complete list stating exactly why you want to lose weight. No matter how big, or how small your reasons are, make sure you jot them all down onto a piece of paper. This is the first step to breakthrough the barrier.

Once you have your list, make a few copies and post them around your house, in your car or anywhere you are likely to see them. The kitchen is an area where you are most likely to break from your healthy eating plan, so make a point of posting a list on your refrigerator and pantry doors to discourage you from breaking from your healthy eating plan. These lists serve to remind you of your goals and the reasons why you wanted to lose weight in the first place.

2. Setting Realistic Goals

You now know why you want to lose weight, therefore it is time to set yourself some realistic goals to work towards. Now in order to set a weight loss goal you need to know how much weight you want to lose. To do this you will need to determine your ideal body weight, and then subtract that figure from your current body weight.

Now that you know your goal you can set yourself a time frame. It is important to be realistic here. If you have a lot of weight to lose you can’t expect to achieve the figure of a supermodel in just a few short weeks. Setting unrealistic goals for yourself will only lead to disappointment, and inevitably your weight loss efforts will come to a grinding halt. For safe and permanent weight loss it is recommended that you lose no more than 1 – 2 pounds per week.

3. Using The Power Of Visualization

Visualization is a very powerful tool that can assist you to work towards your weight loss goals. Every morning before you get up visualize yourself at your desired body weight. Picture your new body, picture yourself wearing a brand new outfit, take notice of how it feels to have lost all of the weight. To assist you with your visualization exercise you may also find pictures of fitness models, celebrities or anyone whom you feel has the body you desire, and then place a picture of your face onto this picture.

The visualization method should not be underestimated as it is a great motivational tool used not only by people wanting to lose weight but also by many of the top athletes and fitness models.

Remember, it is impossible to lose weight overnight. It takes time to transform your negative thoughts into positive ones. Be true to yourself because you are losing weight for yourself, no matter what your underlying factors are, you are doing this is for your health and total wellbeing. So be patient and embrace each positive change in your life as it comes.

Positive thinking?

My son just started college, he so confused and doesn’t know what he want to be and he is not studying, and when ever I want to talk to him he is telling me don’t worry about me, I wonder if anyone can introduce to me some positive thinking CD that I can recommend to him to listen.

If you can even get him to listen to it. Tell him to sit down and listen…you’re the mother and he needs to listen. Tell him that it’s OK that he doesn’t know what to do yet. Many, many students change their majors tons of times until they figure it out. It’s normal. I changed mine three times. Tell him that this feeling is normal. But, if his grades are slipping, there is more to the story than he’s telling you. I have a feeling something else is going on.

Positive Thinking to Keep a Boomer’s Heart Healthy

Heart attack is one of most dangerous serial killers in the world and women are more prone to becoming its victims.  We all know that this killer prefers attacking those with an unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle. But did you know that negative thinking also makes you more vulnerable to heart attacks? Yes, your habit of constantly worrying, expecting the worst, fretting over every small thing can actually invite heart diseases into your life!

How does negative thinking affect your heart’s health?

Researchers at the University of Kentucky found that patients who had negative thinking patterns, such as thoughts about not being able to justify their own existence, were at higher risk for developing depression. Heart patients with depression were shown to have more complications, including a higher risk of death!

Your negative thoughts increase your stress levels and prevent you from focusing on attaining good health.  When you are more focused on how unfit you are or how unfulfilling your life is, you are unlikely to take steps to improve your health. A negative thought pattern promotes a pessimistic and fatalist attitude.

Spiritually, negative thoughts are believed to affect the heart directly. Symbolically your heart stands for your ability to love.  Therefore, holding yourself back from freely receiving and giving love can also cause heart problems.

Therefore in order to keep your heart healthy you must try to think positive. Positive thinking does not just mean expecting the best from life. It also means looking for good in everyone and giving up on your cynicism. Positive thinking includes positive self talk, i.e. believing in yourself and appreciating yourself for who you are. It stands for adopting a new approach to life, an approach which helps you find mental peace and satisfaction.

How to think Positive?

Thinking positive is probably easier said than done. Often when we try to think positive our mind plays spoil sport.  It seems to control us and sneaks in negative thoughts and worries at every opportunity. If only we could learn to control our thoughts, we would be able to control our minds, instead of it working the other way round! It’s not that difficult a task, if we adopt the right approach. The following tips may help.

Make conscious efforts to avoid negative thinking:  We get so used to our negative thinking pattern that sometimes we don’t even realize when we slip into it. However, whenever you do realize that have fallen into the trap of negative thinking, consciously divert your mind to something positive, unrelated to your present negative thought. For instance if you catch yourself worrying about losing your job, stop yourself and divert your attention to an enjoyable game or recently watched movie. Because of your habitual thinking patterns, it may be difficult for you to suddenly start expecting the best out of every situation; in such  cases it’s better to first learn to stop yourself from negative thinking by consciously distracting your mind.

Positive Affirmations: Telling yourself that you expect the best from life and looking for the silver lining in every situation will help bring about a shift in your perception. The logic is simple, if you are told throughout your life that you are a bad dancer, no matter how much potential you have you’ll eventually start viewing yourself as someone with two left feet, without even trying to learn how to dance! Similarly if you tell yourself repeatedly that you have full faith in yourself and expect the best from every situation, it will become your truth.

The following affirmations can help you adopt an approach of positive thinking towards life:

“I love and appreciate myself” (This affirmation helps you get rid of the pattern of negative self-talk)

“It’s safe for me to express my feelings” (This helps you overcome the negative thinking pattern which makes you fear other people’s reactions to your feelings)

“I deserve to love and be loved” (This frees you from the negative thoughts like “I don’t deserve to be loved” or “I am not good enough”)

“I trust life to bring the best to me” (This frees you from your habit of expecting the worst from life)

“I now attract kind and loving people into my life” (This will help you look for good in everyone and overcome your cynical attitude)

Keep yourself busy- You may have observed that you tend to think more when you have nothing to do, however if you keep yourself busy, you won’t have time to dwell on negatives.  Nurturing a hobby, learning something new, exercising, reading and listening to music etc are all enjoyable ways of keeping yourself busy. Doing things that you enjoy, will also keep you in a happier frame of mind- and when happy you are more likely to feel optimistic and think positively.

In the 1970s "power of positive thinking" world it was called "reticular activation", what is it called now?

I am trying to find current research in the cognitive sciences or popular psychology relating to being predisposed to see information and objects. An example is when you buy a new car you start seeing many of these cars on the road (they had been there before, but the person is now more aware).

I know this was called was called the "reticular activation system" in the 1970s in the popular psychology world around the "power of positive thinking" seminars. I have been looking for more recent informaiton and research and I know the terminology has changed. But I do not know what it changed to.

I think the terminology is very scientific and I don’t think it has changed much. But the way in which one interprets the realm of reality and awareness has become less of a science and more of a philosophy. It is an example of how awareness can change your reality at many levels. The power to think positive, is directly related to
