The Psychological Aspect to Executive Coaching

Business coaching is an essential element of the business world and has provided a baffling range of career options today. Business coaching is a multi-faceted field and deals with every aspect of conducting a business. Business coaches today are aware of the significance of psychological competence in executive coaching. In the modern corporate world, more emphasis is laid on the psychological growth and the performance enhancement of executives and managers. Business coaching is an important medium to create a work environment conducive to learning processes and business functions. To deal with issues related to psychological competence, business firms require the services of skilled coaches, specialized in behavioral change.

Behavioral change coaches should possess working knowledge of various psychological methods and tools. They should be skilled enough to be able to use them efficiently in different work settings. In order to understand and analyze different aspects of an employees behavior, it is important to work with him in close association. After assessing his behavioral aspects, the coach strives to sharpen the necessary motivators that are responsible for inducing the desired change in action or performance.

Among all the critical competencies, Executive Coaching Practitioners have realized that psychological models and techniques pertaining to change are most essential in the highly knowledgeable and demanding work environments these days. A successful executive coach requires enforcing of a combination of psychological theory and practice skills, to efficiently help the executives perform within a broad range of professional development assignments.

When executing the theoretical and practical modules of professional development, supervision by a professionally qualified educator with relevant psychological expertise is simultaneously required. Apart from providing the much-needed skills sets, expert supervision considerably adds to the coachs learning and development. Supervision is also necessary to ensure that coach does not go beyond the professional and personal limits of competence.

Psychological-mindedness, which means self-reflection, is an oft-used term in work psychology. Another such term is business-mindedness that refers to knowledge and experience of an individual. Corporate clients have now identified psychological-mindedness, business-mindedness and relationship development, along with professional and personal-psychology based coaching skills, as the main critical competency prerequisites for any business executive or coach.

The term psychological-mindedness indicates the ability of individuals to reflect and self analyze themselves, others and subsequently the correlation between the two. In other words, it means to profoundly consider the underlying causes for behavior, feelings and thoughts. As a business coach, your main aim should be to develop their psychological-mindedness. On the contrary, many focus on acquiring new coaching tools and techniques, before developing their own skills. Coaches, devoid of psychological-mindedness, tend to concentrate on ‘hard’ skills acquisition and problem solving, with little regard to the personal issues of employees and executives.

To be a successful business coach, personal development should not be ignored when achieving important skills. A business coach with sound psychological knowledge has the ability to go to the root of any problem and accordingly develop solutions that reap long-term benefits. Self-awareness and social awareness are crucial to understand behavior.

Today, there are a number of Certified Master Coach courses that incorporate proven and useful psychological-based techniques, tools and processes that are industry-oriented. The skills included in the course are easy to learn and can be easily applied in diverse work settings.

Panic Attacks During Nighttime

About 6 million USA citizens experience panic attacks.  Out of those 6 million, about 50% of them have reported to experience panic attacks in the night.  This has confused many sufferers as they would intuitively think that there would be more panic attack triggers during the day time than at night.  In this article, the explanations for the existence of panic attacks at night will be debated as well as their prevention.

The reasons for panic attacks at night can vary greatly from person to person.  A typical trigger for panic attacks is the sense of the loss of control.  Many night panic attack sufferers believe that being in a comatose sleep state would represent the ultimate absence of control.  They fear the weakness of a defenseless comatose state.  Glaringly, these fears are absolutely daft but they however exist in some nocturnal panic attack sufferers.  These misguided fears oftentimes lead to panic attacks at night.

Another reason for panic attacks at night is the phobia of death while asleep.  Sufferers fear the chance of a coronary or stroke during their sleep.  Again, these fears are quite irrational but nevertheless act as triggers for anxiety attacks at night.

Dreams, however , are glaringly a cause of panic attacks at night.  Dreams only occur in heavy REM sleep and studies have shown that people who experience nocturnal panic attacks don’t experience them during REM sleep.  Panic attacks at night generally transpire during early sleep phase.  Nightmares , however , are a different story all together.  Some panic attacks at night are a result of nightmares as they occur in the second 1/2 the everyday sleep period.  This is why we can remember them.

In fact, there exists a certain type of sleeping disorder called Pavor Nocturnus distinguished by waking up and crying, increased heart rate, cold sweats and heart palpitations and other panic attack-like symptoms.  Pavor Nocturnus is commonest in children.

I hope that this article has been beneficial in enlightening the reader regarding the causes and reasons for nighttime panic attacks.

Why a Mastermind Team?

I have developed and grown as a person over the last five years and I give credit to the concept of a mastermind team for much of that growth. Over the years I have participated in a number of mastermind teams, some more beneficial that others. But, ALL have been beneficial in some way. Through the eyes of others I have been able to see, create and design an exciting new life with many new possibilities!

‘The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious.’ – John Sculley, past president of PepsiCo, celebrated CEO of Apple

My first introduction to the mastermind concept was Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Jack Canfield also writes about the power of a mastermind team in the book The Power of Focus. There are many examples that financial success is a fairly clear measure of how the power of mastermind can make a difference. A wonderful book that demonstrates this is Uncommon Friends by Jim Newton.

There is awesome power in the mastermind team to make positive and lasting changes in our personal lives as well as our financial lives.

What is one area of your life that you would like to make some positive changes in? What is working in your life? Ask yourself what could be working better?

What kind of support do you already have? Do you have a supportive family and friends in your life? Are they challenging you to learn and grow, stretching yourself to become an ever better you? A benefit of a productive mastermind team is that you surround yourself with people you can learn from. Even if you are one of the smartest people in your mastermind team; there will still be areas where you can learn from others.

With a Mastermind team you will discover all kinds of possibilities that you have overlooked or never seen; you will be excited about what you discover is available to you. “A sign of a very intelligent person is to be smart enough to realize that you need to learn from others who can contribute to your WHY in life.” – John Di Lemme

The Mastermind process is based on an ancient principle that has been proven time and time again: “When two or more people come together in a spirit of harmony and trust to work together towards a common purpose or goal, their combined energies are many, many times greater than the simple sum of their respective individual energies.” – John Carpenter Dealey

Through your mastermind team you can find solutions to everyday problems whether they are about health, relationships or money.

A mastermind team is a great way to get advice and encouragement in the areas of your life where you would like to see positive changes. Ask yourself, “Is my personal development engine in Forward, Neutral or Reverse?”

By having a mastermind group around, U won’t have to go it alone.

Write down the top 10 people you regularly associate with. When you review the list, understand that you will become an exact duplicate of those people. – This is where you need to be very honest with yourself. If you do not want to be an exact duplicate of those people then you will need to change who you regularly associate with.

I am proud to say that each and every day I associate with people who are either at my level of enthusiasm, excitement and intelligence or even more than I am which is the key to a personally productive mastermind team. You need to be a part of a group of people who make you want to exceed your present reach.

I encourage you to purchase the books mentioned in this article. Send me and email to with your thoughts and ideas regarding your mastermind team or the mastermind team you would like to create, I would love to hear from you.
