Diversity in Coaching

Diversity In Coaching

As the world of life and business coaching continues to grow, there are is more in terms of diversity to choose from. This is an advantage to the clients. We can all look at the same thing but see something different. This is true when a coach is working with different clients in different situations. Let’s examine some of the different things to look at in terms of coaches.

Why do you want a life or business coach? This is a very important question to ask your self. Are you looking to achieve personal or business goals. This will help you decide if you want a life or business coach.

What type of style fits your needs? Different coaches in the same field use different approaches. After your first session, you will have an idea of what style this coach uses. Many times just discussing some things that you are not comfortable with is enough. Some coaches will adjust while other coaches will not. It is however a good idea to discuss this with your new coach.

What the certifications or experience this coach has? There are life and business coaches that have been certified by one of the recognized certification groups. There are also some very good coaches that simply have plenty experience and no real formal training. Do not eliminate or automatically choose either type. Simply ask if they have any certifications or what there experience is in the field. Many times a recommendation from a friend or colleague is more important than either of these.

Making the decision to use a life or business coach is a big step. Make sure and take the time to do your research. Do not jump into this relationship haphazardly. This can be a decision that can have a profound effect on the rest of your life.

You will see plenty of ads on websites and in print about life, business and personal development coaches. The question is how do you pick from all of the options. Here are somethings that you should consider.

1. Think about what you want to accomplish. – What do you want this coach to help you do? There are many different things that a person can want to get out of working with a coach. Think about this ahead of time and then discuss with your potential coach. The coach should help you clarify your goals or wants.

2. Look at styles – Different coaches have styles and no one coach will fit all people. Talk about how the coach likes to work with their clients. If their style does not seem to fit with you discuss it with them. They might have specific reasons for what they do that you will agree with. Another possibility is that their style does not fit you. In this case, feel free to shop around.

3. Talk about budget but understand nothing is free – Ask the coach what they typically charge and what is included for that price. Discuss if that does or does not fit your personal budget. If not ask if they have any thing that could be taken out of the package or if fewer sessions would help. Realize that the coaches time is valuable

4. Get referrals – Ask for current clients or check with friends or co workers if they had experience worked with a coach. Talking to others will help.

Take the time to do your research and find a coach that fits your style and needs.
